This indicator is currently being revised as new data is available.

In the years 1992 to 2017 the percentage of people who rated their health as good or very good remained largely stable. It varied over this period from between 82.8% and 86.7%. In 2017, 85.9% of men and 83.5% of women rated their health as good to very good. 75.3% of the population having completed no more than compulsory schooling rated their health as good or very good in 2017. With 90.8%, this figure is significantly higher among persons with a tertiary qualification. 90.3% of employed persons rated their health as (very) good in 2017. Among the unemployed this percentage was much lower, at 72.8%.

This indicator is part of the Monitoring System Addiction and NCD (MonAM) of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

This indicator shows how healthy people feel. Self-rated health is a common enough concept. Although it is a subjective indication, it is correlated closely with various measurable values of morbidity, mortality, health services utilisation and corresponding prognoses.

The indicator provides a general overview of the population’s health. It can be used for an initial, general orientation and evaluation of trends in the population’s health. It also provides indications about socio-economic differences and about groups that may be vulnerable in terms of health.

Definition

This indicator is based on the Swiss Health Survey.

It shows the percentage of persons by their answer to the question (TSUBG05) from the Swiss Health Survey (HSH): “How is your health in general? Is it very good/good/average/poor/very poor/don’t know/no answer?”

It should be noted that the answer categories and the formulation of questions have changed slightly over time.

An explanation of socio-demographic variables can be found in the document: Definition of the characteristics
