Alcohol is an integral part of our culture and is consumed in moderation by the majority of the Swiss population. However, when consumed in excess, alcohol is at the origin of numerous health problems (cancer, cirrhosis, cardiovascular problems, etc.) and also has an impact on society (violence, road accidents and accidents at the workplace, etc.).

The alcohol indicators are defined in the two national strategies "Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases" and "Addiction". They describe the situation in regard to consumption, impact on health and the society as well as in regard to treatment. The population’s knowledge and opinion on the legislation are also described.
