Non-communicable diseases affect one in every four persons in Switzerland and represent a very heavy burden on society. They mainly comprise cancers, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and musculoskeletal diseases. Lifestyle and the environment are non-negligible factors in the appearance of these diseases, and prevention thus plays a very important role to delay or prevent their occurrence.

The following indicators are defined in the national strategy "Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases". They describe the principal diseases in regard to prevalence, impact on health and on society.
