The consumption of tobacco is very widespread in Switzerland. It is addictive and harmful to human health. Smoking and passive smoking give rise to cancer, heart and lung diseases as well as to numerous other health problems.
The tobacco indicators are defined in the two national strategies "Prevention of noncommunicable diseases" and "Addiction". They describe the products of tobacco in regard to consumption, impact on health and the society as well as in regard to treatment. The population’s knowledge and opinion on the legislation are also described.
